Lois Dodd is associated with a particular strain of east coast landscape painting whose lineage includes Charles Hawthorn and Edwin Dickinson. Her landscapes reduce the elements in nature to simple direct painting techniques evoking the patchwork effects of associated with the advent of modernism in Europe at the end of the 19th century. Her work is also aligned with American Modernists such as Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley and Georgia O'Keeffe. These American artists began reducing natural forms to near-abstractions during the first decade of abstract painting in Europe. Born in 1927, Lois Dodd began showing at the legendary Tananger Gallery in New York in 1954. These were the formative years when New York was in the process of evolving into the world capital for contemporary art due to the advent of Abstract Expressionism in America. Abstract painting was taking over the world at mid-century and artists in Lois Dodd's circle of influence began incorporating their ideas while staying loyal to their figurative roots. – Mark Strathy, Director
